Er is berekend dat infecties met schimmels jaarlijks bij ongeveer een\u00a0miljard mensen voorkomen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hoewel schimmels een belangrijke rol spelen in de homeostase van de mens, kunnen ze ook een gezondheidsbelasting vormen voor bepaalde groepen pati\u00ebnten. Wanneer de balans tussen gastheer en schimmel wordt verstoord, kan een schimmelinfectie ernstige gevolgen hebben. Een goede detectie van de groei van schimmels is daarom van groot belang in de klinische microbiologie. Veel voorkomende schimmelinfecties zijn:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n[\/vc_column_text][mk_custom_list style=&#8221;mk-moon-circle-small&#8221;]\n<ul>\n<li><em>Candida albicans<\/em> maakt deel uit van de menselijke microflora. De verspreiding van <em>Candida<\/em> in lichaamsweefsels veroorzaakt een systemische candidiasis. Overmatige en ongeremde groei is het gevolg van verstoring van het gevoelige evenwicht en manifesteert zich in de vorm van orale en\/of vaginale zweren.<\/li>\n<li><em>Pneumocystis jirovecii<\/em> veroorzaakt geen symptomen bij gezonde mensen en is wijd verspreid onder de algemene bevolking.
