Typische symptomen zijn diarree, braken en buikpijn.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ziekten met diarree zijn een belangrijk gezondheidsprobleem dat wereldwijd verantwoordelijk is voor ongeveer 2\u00a0miljard gevallen van gastro-enteritis. Diarree is de op \u00e9\u00e9n na meest voorkomende doodsoorzaak bij kinderen jonger dan 5\u00a0jaar. In veel gevallen zijn gastro-intestinale infecties zelfbeperkend en duren ze niet langer dan een paar dagen. In zorgomgevingen en in specifieke bevolkingsgroepen zoals pasgeborenen\/peuters, immunogecompromiteerde pati\u00ebnten en ouderen zijn ze potentieel ernstig.<\/p>\n<p>Gastro-intestinale infecties kunnen worden veroorzaakt door bacteri\u00ebn, virussen en parasieten. De klinische symptomen zijn bijna identiek. Het is dus moeilijk en bijna onmogelijk om de pathogene oorzaak alleen op basis van klinische kenmerken te bepalen.<\/p>\n<p>Snelle diagnostiek, adequate behandeling en infectiebeheersing zijn in deze context belangrijke maatregelen.
