Hospital acquired infections worden verder als volgt geclassificeerd:[\/vc_column_text][mk_custom_list style=&#8221;mk-moon-circle-small&#8221;]\n<ul>\n<li>Exogene infecties hebben betrekking op infecties door een pathogeen in de omgeving van de pati\u00ebnt.<\/li>\n<li>Endogene infecties kunnen worden ingedeeld in primaire en secundaire infecties. Primaire endogene infecties worden veroorzaakt door pathogenen uit de flora van de pati\u00ebnt zelf. Als het pathogeen afkomstig is uit de flora van de pati\u00ebnt zelf en een infectie heeft veroorzaakt tijdens een behandeling, dan wordt deze infectie secundair endogeen genoemd.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n[\/mk_custom_list][vc_column_text]De meest voorkomende vormen van hospital acquired infections zijn urineweginfecties, sepsis door veneuze katheters, pneumonie en postoperatieve infecties. Bij in het ziekenhuis opgelopen gastro-intestinale infecties is <em>Clostridium difficile<\/em> meestal de ziekteverwekker. Van alle soorten micro-organismen, met inbegrip van bacteri\u00ebn en schimmels, is bekend dat ze hospital acquired infections kunnen veroorzaken die moeilijk te behandelen zijn, vooral in het geval van antibiotica-resistente stammen als methicilline-resistente <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> (MRSA).<\/p>\n<p>De CDC (Centers of Disease Control and Prevention) stelt dat op een willekeurige dag ongeveer \u00e9\u00e9n van de 25\u00a0ziekenhuispati\u00ebnten ten minste \u00e9\u00e9n zorggerelateerde infectie heeft. Volgens een HAI Prevalence Survey waren er in 2011 naar schatting ongeveer 722.000 hospital acquired infections in ziekenhuizen voor acute zorg in de VS. Daarnaast stierven 75.000 pati\u00ebnten met hospital acquired infections tijdens de ziekenhuisopname. In Europa wordt geschat dat tweederde van de 25.000 sterfgevallen per jaar wordt veroorzaakt door infecties met gramnegatieve bacteri\u00ebn.<\/p>\n<p>De belangrijkste factoren die van invloed zijn op de incidentie van hospital acquired infections zijn onder meer leeftijd en conditie van pati\u00ebnten, kennis van het personeel over hygi\u00ebnische procedures en preventie van infecties, en de organisatie van ziekenhuizen. De hygi\u00ebneprotocollen omvatten bijvoorbeeld sterilisatie van apparatuur, grondig wassen van de handen, handen wassen met alcohol voor en na elk pati\u00ebntcontact en een zorgvuldiger gebruik van antibiotica.
